Student Sculpture Design Collaborative

Picture
We are proud to announce the completion of a unique collaboration between the Perrysburg Sculpture Walk and Penta Career Center High School's Digital Art & Design program, bringing student creativity into the community spotlight. Through this partnership, high school junior Erik Baker’s design was selected by sculptor Mike Sohikian from 35 student submissions to transform the steel base of Balance 1, which Sohikian generously donated for this endeavor. Under the guidance of muralist and mentor Dean Davis, Erik engaged in hands-on learning of professional art practices, from concept development to the final application of his design.

This collaboration marks a significant milestone for the Penta Digital Art & Design Department, showcasing student creativity in a public setting and enriching their professional portfolios. Perrysburg Sculpture Walk curator, and coordinator, Robin Ballmer engaged with PCC Art students early in the process, providing project guidelines and artistic direction. The selection of Erik Baker's work highlights the educational value of student contributions to public art and underscores the Perrysburg Sculpture Walk’s commitment to fostering local talent. This experience has been invaluable for students, offering them a tangible connection to community art initiatives and real-world design.

Participants in the collaboration:

Erik Baker- The student designer selected for this collaboration. Erik is 17 years old and a Junior at PCC, with plans to study marketing and graphic arts in college.

Mike Sohikian- An area artist who is a legend in the arts and trades for his steel work.  Mike is not only a well-known sculptor, but also the installation director for the Perrysburg Sculpture Walk.

Dean Davis- A nationally known muralist who was the lead painter on the Glass City River Wall (grain silos), designer and painter of the Metroparks Toledo's Pickleball facility mural in downtown Toledo and many more in the area and across the country. Dean's current mural work, the Change Wall, is being done on the abutments on the Anthony Wayne Trail.

Steven Lark- Digital Art & Design Instructor at Penta Career Center. Mr. Lark jumped at the opportunity to have his students participate in the project.

Marie Dunn- Thanks to Marie and her effective press releases we had both Channel 11 and Channel 13 interviewing the student and Dean Davis. An exciting day for the student!

Thank you all again for supporting the Perrysburg Sculpture Walk initiative, which is proving to be a multifaceted community project that not only enhances our public space but also engages and inspires the next generation of artists.

"Public art can express community values, enhance our environment, transform a landscape, heighten our awareness, or question our assumptions. Placed in public sites, this art is there for everyone, a form of collective community expression. Public art is a reflection of how we see the world – the artist’s response to our time and place combined with our own sense of who we are."
